Print Culture and the Modern World Part 2 [ 1 The First Printed Books ]

 1 The First Printed Books

- The earliest kind of print technology started in China, Japan, and Korea. It was called hand printing.

- In China, from AD 594 onwards, books were printed by rubbing paper on inked woodblocks.

- The paper used was thin and porous, so only one side could be printed. The books were folded and stitched like an accordion

- Chinese craftsmen were very skilled and could copy calligraphy with great accuracy.

- The Chinese government was the biggest producer of printed materials for a long time.

- China had a large government system, and many people had to pass civil service exams, so textbooks were printed in huge numbers.

- In the seventeenth century, as cities grew, print was used for more things like trade, stories, and poetry.

- Women also started reading, writing, and publishing poetry and plays.

- In the late nineteenth century, Western printing technology and machines came to China.

- Shanghai became the center for new print culture using Western-style schools and printing machines.

- There was a shift from hand printing to mechanical printing.
