 2.3 Swaraj in the Plantations

Workers had their own idea of what Mahatma Gandhi and swaraj meant.  

मज़दूरों के पास महात्मा गांधी और स्वराज का अपना मतलब था।

 

For tea plantation workers in Assam, freedom meant being able to leave the place where they worked and stay connected to their villages. 

असम के चाय बागान के मज़दूरों के लिए आज़ादी का मतलब था कि वे जहां काम करते थे, वहां से बाहर जा सकें और अपने गांव से जुड़े रहें।

 

The law at that time did not allow them to leave the tea gardens without permission, and they hardly ever got permission. 

उस समय का कानून उन्हें बिना अनुमति के चाय बागानों से बाहर जाने नहीं देता था, और उन्हें शायद ही कभी अनुमति मिलती थी।

 

When they heard about the non-cooperation movement, many workers left the plantations and tried to go back to their villages. 

जब उन्होंने असहयोग आंदोलन के बारे में सुना, तो कई मज़दूर बागानों को छोड़कर अपने गांव वापस जाने की कोशिश करने लगे।

 

They believed Gandhi raj was coming, and everyone would get land in their villages. 

वे मानते थे कि गांधी राज आ रहा है और हर किसी को उनके गांव में ज़मीन मिलेगी।

 

But they never made it home. 

लेकिन वे घर नहीं पहुंच सके।

 

On the way, they got stuck because of a strike, and the police caught them and beat them. 

रास्ते में हड़ताल के कारण वे फंस गए, और पुलिस ने उन्हें पकड़कर पीटा।

 

These workers had their own understanding of swaraj, thinking it would solve all their problems. 

इन मज़दूरों ने अपने तरीके से स्वराज को समझा, यह सोचकर कि इससे उनकी सभी समस्याएं हल हो जाएंगी।

 

Even though they thought of Swaraj differently, when they shouted Gandhiji’s name and asked for 'Swatantra Bharat,' they felt part of a bigger movement. 

हालांकि उन्होंने स्वराज को अलग तरह से सोचा, लेकिन जब उन्होंने गांधीजी का नाम लेकर 'स्वतंत्र भारत' की मांग की, तो उन्हें एक बड़े आंदोलन का हिस्सा महसूस हुआ।

 

By connecting their struggles to Gandhi and Congress, they became part of something beyond just their local issues. 

अपने संघर्ष को गांधी और कांग्रेस से जोड़कर, वे सिर्फ अपने स्थानीय मुद्दों से आगे बढ़कर कुछ बड़े का हिस्सा बन गए।

 

Difficult words and their meanings: 

1. Swaraj (स्वराज): self-rule or independence. 

2. Non-cooperation movement (असहयोग आंदोलन): a movement led by Mahatma Gandhi against British rule in India. 

3. Plantation (बागान): a large farm where crops like tea are grown. 

4. Authorities (अधिकारियों): people in power or government officials.
