2.4 Rinderpest, or the Cattle Plague 

1. In the 1890s, a cattle disease called rinderpest spread quickly in Africa.

2. It had a terrible effect on people's jobs and the local economy.

3. This disease shows how European imperialism affected colonized societies.

9. To get labor, Europeans imposed heavy taxes and changed laws.

11. Then, rinderpest disease came and killed 90% of the cattle in Africa.

12. The loss of cattle ruined African livelihoods.

13. Europeans took control of the remaining cattle and forced Africans to work.

14. This is how European colonizers used a disease to control Africa.
